You may have moved simply because you love Cornish pasties too much! Whatever the reason for your relocation, Cornwall is a fantastic place to live if you want fresh air, gorgeous beaches and true community spirit.

For your convenience, we have put together the ultimate Cornish guide for anyone moving to the area. While there are plenty of leaflets to have a read through, you really can’t beat insider’s knowledge - and we’re here to give you just that. Whether you picture yourself catching the waves on a surfboard or mingling with locals in a countryside pub, read on for everything you need to know about moving to Cornwall.

A few quick facts…

●    Cornwall is the most southwest county of the UK, extending into the sea as a peninsula. It is also home to the longest coastline in Britain - a whole 433 miles!

●    The Cornish language is now largely extinct, so, don’t worry, you won’t be needing to learn a new language. The last person known to speak Cornish as a first language (which is one of the original Celtic languages) is thought to have died in 1777.

●    The name “Cornwall” is derived from the old Cornish words “Cornovii” and “Waelas”, meaning dwellers and strangers or foreigners. “Kernow” is the Cornish name for Cornwall.

●    Cornwall is home to the largest collection of plant species found in the British Isles. The ocean is also bursting with life as well; on average, a Cornish fisherman can catch over forty species of fish! This makes it the ideal area to spot dolphins, seals and basking sharks.

●    Each year, five million tourists visit Cornwall - and you’re lucky enough to be permanently moving there!

Getting settled in

Settling into any new area can be daunting at best, however, you can rest assured that getting settled into Cornwall shouldn’t be too much of a problem. With so much on offer and so many beautiful areas to visit, you’ll feel right at home near the seaside in no time. Cornwall is known for its sense of community and welcoming residents; in fact, many people love living in Cornwall simply because of the community culture. If walking into a bustling local pub alone on a Thursday night and knowing everyone in there sounds like your cup of tea, Cornwall is the place for you. Follow our top tips below to get settled in:

●    Host a housewarming party. A housewarming party is a great and easy way to get to know your neighbours and they’ll appreciate being invited round to meet the new members of their community. It’s also a great way to get some recommendations about the area.

●    Join local clubs and classes. Joining local classes is another great way to get stuck into the community and to meet new people that share the same hobbies as you. From knitting and cookery courses to yoga and Zumba fitness classes, there is something for everyone in Cornwall.

●    Volunteer. One fantastic way to learn more about the community is to volunteer, whether it’s helping to clean up the beaches, clearing paths at local parks or dedicating your time to help with wildlife conservation in Cornwall.

Things to do

When you move to a new area, there is no better way to explore your new surroundings and learn about the history and culture of a place than by stepping into the shoes of a tourist. Cornwall is full of unique towns that have lots to offer; below we take a look at a few of the towns and things to do there.

Falmouth

Nestled in a sheltered bay on the south coast of Cornwall, the charming seaside town of Falmouth is one of Cornwall’s largest towns. Falmouth is home to a quaint old harbour and docks, beautiful sandy beaches and a range of things to do, including:

●    Pendennis Castle. Described as one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal fortresses, Pendennis Castle is the perfect place to get to grips with history. There are plenty of hands-on activities for all ages to get stuck into, from experiencing the sounds and sights of the battle to how the castle has evolved over time.

●    Falmouth Art Gallery. With one of the leading art collections in Cornwall and the South West of England, award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery is home to some of the best British art and gifts from the county’s leading printmakers, ceramicists and jewellers.

●    Glendurgan Garden. The perfect place for a family outing, Glendurgan Garden is the ideal place to get lost in nature. The gardens are home to beautiful and intriguing exotic plants, a huge maze and the tranquil Helford River.

Newquay

Voted ‘one of the nation’s favourite seaside towns’ in the Which Holiday Survey, Newquay is a charming town located on Cornwall’s Atlantic Coast. Here you can enjoy seven miles of beautiful sandy beaches. A few other things to enjoy include:

●    Newquay Zoo. The zoo originally opened in 1969 and is just a short walk from the town centre. Here you can delve into the lives of 130 different species of the world’s creatures, including monkeys, lemurs and lions.

●    The Japanese Garden. Open from March 1st until October 31st, The Japanese Garden is the perfect place to spend spring and summer afternoons. Relax and rejuvenate amongst bamboo plants, bonsai trees, Japanese maple trees and tranquil ponds.

●    Lane Theatre. Lane Theatre is Newquay’s only theatre; if you enjoy experiencing theatre and entertainment in small and intimate venues, this is the place for you. The founders of the theatre are known for putting on works written by up-and-coming playwrights, so you can experience some fresh talent.

St Ives

St Ives is one of Cornwall’s most popular destinations and it’s not hard to see why. The north coast fishing town is clustered around the charming harbour, boasting a mix of golden beaches and picturesque winding streets. Things to do include:

●    Tate St Ives. The Tate Gallery in St Ives is home to some of the best-loved British artworks of the 20th century. If breath-taking scenery of the Atlantic ocean and inspiring pieces of art sound appealing, then this is the place to go.

●    Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden. Barbara Hepworth was one of St Ives’ most influential artists; her work features in prestigious locations all around the world. The gardens are where Hepworth worked during her life; here you can find her famous geometric abstract bronze sculptures.

●    The Down-a-long. To truly experience St Ives, you can’t miss the Down-a-long: the old, lower part of St Ives that is nestled on the ridge of land that separates the island from the rest of the town. Expect quaint cobbled streets, whitewashed cottages, galleries, cafes and shops - the perfect place for a wander.

Wherever you choose to move to in Cornwall, you will never be too far from the sea and never short of things to do. From beautiful sunsets and harbourside walks to fun water sport activities and clubs, it’s the ideal place to get stuck into countryside life.
